A teacher can only be great if he/she talks and learns from peers. If teachers only use their own resources and teaching tidbits, then their ceiling for being a great teacher is limited. However, if they use other teachers and experienced faculty members then they will be able to grow and learn from their experiences.

The competent teacher builds and maintains collaborative relationships to foster cognitive, linguistic, physical, and social and emotional development. This teacher works as a team. If teachers always assume their method of teaching is the best way, then they will restrict their students from reaching their full potential.

Assessment

Assessment

Many teachers believe tests are the only method in assessing students. However, their are many ways to assess students without making them feel uncomfortable by giving them a test. Certain students shut down just by hearing the word test or quiz. One great way to assess students is to ask them questions as a group and allows for them to learn from their peers.

Another great method to assess students is by asking them questions individually so they do not feel embarrassed if they do not know the answers. The competent teacher understands and uses appropriate formative and summative assessments for determining student needs, monitoring student progress, measuring student. Another assessment teachers could use is by checking for understanding with games and activities.

Instructional Delivery

Instructional Delivery

A great teacher does not only use one method of instructional delivery. One reason for that is students learn differently. If a teacher uses only way to teach a certain lesson then only those students who understand that specific teaching method will be understanding the lesson. Throughout my preclinical I have seen students love when the teacher uses videos and other times when the teacher uses games and activities. The main objective for a teacher is student learning.

If students learn better one way, then the teacher should not be afraid to use that method even if it is different. The competent teacher differentiates instruction by using a variety
of strategies that support critical and creative thinking, problem-solving, and continuous growth and
learning. This teacher understands that the classroom is a dynamic environment requiring ongoing
modification of instruction to enhance learning for each student.
